“Unlimited veterinary consultations” is one of the strongest benefits offered by some pet health plans, but it should not be read as unlimited veterinary care. The consultation itself and the treatment resulting from it are separate things.
In the current Vets Compared catalogue, plans advertising unlimited consultations commonly continue to charge separately for medication, diagnostic tests, procedures and treatment. Referral consultations or out-of-hours services may also sit outside the benefit, and some providers apply fair-use conditions.

This does not make unlimited consultations a poor benefit. For an owner whose pet needs repeated clinical assessment, removing the normal consultation fee can materially reduce the cost of seeking veterinary advice and may reduce hesitation about booking an appointment. The important point is understanding what the subscription removes from the bill and what remains payable.
When comparing unlimited-consultation plans, check whether the benefit covers routine appointments, sickness consultations or both. Also check out-of-hours care, referrals, diagnostic work and medication rather than assuming those services follow automatically from a free consultation.
